Emotional Intelligence Coaching Can Be A Lucrative Alternative To Managed Healthcare For Psychotherapists
Since the advent of Managed Healthcare, the annual earnings of private practice psychotherapists have been significantly limited. The goal of Health Maintenance organizations is to reduce the fees paid for each intervention and to use the least experienced providers. Brief interventions are mandated regardless of the diagnosis.
I became an Emotional Intelligence Coach at the request of the Medical Director of a major hospital chain in Dallas, Texas. I was offered assistance in developing a six-month coaching model for “disruptive physicians” based on the requirements of the Joint Commission On The Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Surgeons from this healthcare organization made it clear that mental health counseling or psychiatric assessments or psychotherapy would not be acceptable to physician clients.
The physicians who assisted me in writing the coaching curriculum for ‘disruptive physicians” provided invaluable information regarding the unique needs of physician clients. Physicians are reluctant to access any intervention that requires a psychiatric assessment unless “fitness for duty” is the issue. Such an assessment is considered a risk of “career derailment”. In addition, I was informed that the services must be scheduled on-site anywhere in the nation at the convenience of the physician client.
Hospitals, like business and industry are very much interested in “evidenced based” intervention. My staff and I are all trained in the use of the EQ-i-2.0 Assessment along with the 360 degree and Group Assessments. We use the EQ-2.0 as Pre and Post Assessments ” we have provided more coaching for disruptive physicians than any other provider in the nation. Some of the unanticipated issues learned in working with this client population is the incidence of depression and or family conflict is this population. Without training in differential diagnosis and treatment, this information would not be known.
Well- trained psychotherapists with demonstrated knowledge in Mental Health and Emotional Intelligence Coaching can earn $500 per hour and expect to receive a constant flow of referrals. Expanding your work to include leadership coaching and trainings can increase one’s income substantially.
